PrivaSee
A Google Chrome extension that simplifies the legal jargon of privacy policies, and terms & conditions in a straightforward and digestible format.
The Solution
Any good company should show their users in jargon-free, simplified language what type of information they grab from you and what they’re doing with it. The benefit of knowing what you agree to on the internet greatly outweighs the privacy risks of blindly clicking ‘accept’.
To counteract the potential risks, I created a Google Chrome extension that automatically scans websites for their privacy policies and their terms and conditions. Once the website has been scanned, the Chrome extension simplifies terms and conditions/privacy policies into a readable and jargon-free format.
This will allow users to gain a clear understanding of what they are agreeing to and help them realize the importance of reading through this information.

The Problem
Let's face it. You and I don't have the time to read a company's 20-page, single-spaced, legal nonsense document that outlines our rights and privacies as consumers -- right?
Companies often give us a whole lot to read when it comes to their terms and conditions or privacy policies. Privacy policies empower consumers to better understand and control the data they share, that is if they understand it! The goal of this project is to aid consumers in better understanding what they are agreeing to when clicking “I accept”.
Let’s talk about Numbers:
91%
of people consent to legal terms and services conditions without reading them (Source: Deloitte Survey)
97%
of young people ages 18-34 agree to conditions without reading them (Source: Deloitte Survey)
13%
say they never share personal information online (Source: Deloitte Survey)

Takeaways & Next Steps
This project helped me get a better understanding of building deliverables outside of mobile apps, web apps, and websites! The landscape for creating a Chrome extension was different than what I was used to doing, but I had a lot of fun in the process. Like with every project and experience, I learned so many valuable things.
For my next steps, I've asked a few friends in Waterloo's Computer Science program to help me out with the development process! This will help me improve my design-to-developer handoff skills and I'm excited to get this project going.
I Do Not Accept!
Don't agree with the terms? Click 'I do not accept' and a notice will pop up to show you your next steps.
